A rack that holds devices that has a number of jacks (usually of
similar type), used to connect all devices in data centers is called a
patch panel rack. These patch panels are usually mounted on the server
rack to perform relevant functions. Many people face problems with
installation of patch panel and switch in the telecommunication room as
there would be mesh of wires from the patch panel to the switch.
A patch panel uses patch cords which are a type of jumper cable to
create each interconnection. Circuits can be rearranged by plugging and
unplugging respective patch cords. Many organizations place these panels
in a wiring closet like a slimline cabinet, where networking and other electrical connections are made.
In an enterprise, the patch panel serves as a sort of static
switchboard, using cables to interconnect network computer with in a LAN
and to outside lines. Patch panels can also be used to interconnect and
manage fiber optic cables.
These panels are usually attached to network racks, above or below
the network switches and take up to 1.75 inches of space. As the name
suggests the patch cords connect ports in the patch panel to ports in
the network switch. These connections are permanent in nature and would
not be disturbed during moves, add or changes.
Patch panel can be said to be one type of connector. A network switch
connects clients within a network to enable them to access the internet,
share data and perform other functions. Switching equipment can be used
as an alternate for patch panels and may be advantage as they could
help in routing of signals.
